Why we use points
We use a system called "points" as our currency of choice on the More Satisfying family of web sites. This may seem odd to some so we thought we'd take this opportunity to explain all the benefits and reasons why.
- We have users from all over the world using many different currencies. Rather than having to quote multiple prices or leave you to calculate currency conversion rates on your own, points provides a universal form of currency that everyone can use, regardless where they are visiting us from.
- All or most of our offerings are very low priced. Online courses may cost as little as US$1 per lesson. It is impractical for both us and you to collect such small fees through traditional means.
- You can earn points. That's right, we'll pay you to learn from us and to interact on our web site! This is something we can only afford to do through the use of points (see below for a list of examples.)
- Points can be donated or shared. We are building a community. Have a friend who needs a few extra points? You can give her some of yours! Want to buy an online course as a gift for someone else? Buy points and then donate them to that person.
- In addition to earning points or having points awarded, you can also purchase points. This can conveniently be done through Paypal. You can buy as many or as few points as you wish. Points have a value of US$0.01 (one US cent) each. Therefore, 100 points is worth US$1. You may buy up to 10,000 points (US$100) at a time, in 100 point (US$1) increments.
Paypal will handle currency conversion for our visitors outside the US.
Examples of points usage on the More Satisfying family of web sites:
- You earn 100 points when you register. (Note that you can sign up for the newsletter without registering for the web site. Points are only awarded when you register for the web site.)
- You earn 100 points when you refer others who sign up and list you as the referrer.
- You earn points when you read certain articles or access certain content. For instance, reading this article (assuming you are registered and logged in) has earned you 5 points. The system will not pop up a message when you earn new points but you can check your points account at any time. Also, you cannot earn points multiple times for reading the same article more than once.
- You earn 100 points on your birthday, assuming you fill out the profile on your points account and we know when your birthday is.
- You may earn points if you win a contest. For example, we may start having seasonal or themed photo contests at some point.
- As we add paid content, it will cost you points to access it. We will always list the points cost on the menu link(s) for such items. If you do not have enough points, the system will tell you so. Once you have accessed paid content, the system will pop up a message advising you how many points have been deducted from your account. You only pay for content once. Once you've paid for it, you may go back to an article, video or other content an unlimited number of times without having points deducted again.
- You will earn 5 points just for logging in. You can only earn these points once per day but you don't have to do anything extra to get them.
- From time to time we may opt to award bonus points. These may go to individuals, groups or to everyone.
